On Oct. 19’s premiere episode, the 28-year-old, Season 18 lead met 30 potential paramours in all (the same number who initially vied for Katie Thurston’s heart on Season 17 earlier this year) at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort and Spa in Indian Wells, California. The romantic hopefuls included one contestant who showed up in a school bus, another who gave her a yardstick to discipline him, and a third dressed in an apple costume (all nods to her career as a teacher), plus another guy who awkwardly tried to give her Mardi Gras beads, the two firefighters who arrived in competing fire trucks (one of them real, the other a toy!) and—maybe most ridiculous—the guy who showed up pantsless in a suit jacket and tuxedo-themed briefs. Oh, and how can we forget the guy who showed up with his head on a literal platter for her? There was also the revelation that one contestant (cough, Ryan, cough) had in-depth notes detailing things like how to get more screen time and appear likable on the show, and that didn’t exactly end well for him. So, which contestants already got the boot? Find out who Michelle Young sent home on the first night of TheBachelorette Season 18—and who got her first impression rose.

Nayte snagged Michelle’s first impression rose. The 27-year-old sales executive from Austin, Texas (but originally from Winnipeg, Canada) won Michelle over when he spoke openly about wanting to create a loving household with his future wife.
