What you saw is called ball lightning, an electrical weather phenomenon that is poorly understood, mostly because it is so rare. When it occurs, the ball usually appears to dance in the sky until it disappears. A ground appearance is even rarer. Rarest of all, ball lightning occasionally passes right through a window.
