Taylor Swift ‘You All Over Me’ Lyrics
Once the last drop of rain has dried off the pavement Shouldn’t I find a stain? But I never do The way the tires turn stones on old county roads They leave it muddy underneath, reminds me of you You find graffiti on the walls of old bathroom stalls You know you can scratch it right off, it’s how we used to be But like the dollar in your pocket, it’s been spent and traded in You can’t change where it’s been, reminds me of me I lived, and I learned, had you, got burned Held out and held on God knows too long, and wasted time Lost tears, swore that I’d get out of here But no amount of freedom gets you clean I’ve still got you all over me The best and worst day of June Was the one that I met you With your hands in your pockets And your “don’t you wish you had me?” grin Well I did, so I smiled, and I melted like a child Now every breath of air I breathe reminds me of then And I lived, and I learned, had you, got burned Held out and held on God knows, too long, and wasted time Lost tears, swore that I’d get out of here No amount of freedom gets you clean I’ve still got you all over me I lived, and I learned, and found out what it was to turn around And see that we were never really meant to be So I lied, and I cried, and I watched a part of myself die ‘Cause no amount of freedom gets you clean I’ve still got you all over me I’ve still got you all over me
When did Taylor Swift write ‘You All Over Me’?
Because Swift is releasing “You All Over Me (From the Vault)” on her Fearless (Taylor’s Version) album, it’s estimated she wrote the song around the same time she penned tunes for the original Fearless, released in November 2008. Swift previously explained the motivation behind releasing her “From the Vault” series of tunes. “Only I know which songs I wrote that almost made the Fearless album. Songs I absolutely adored, but were held back for different reasons (don’t want too many breakup songs, don’t want too many downtempo songs, can’t fit that many songs on a physical CD),” she recalled. “These were the ones it killed me to leave behind.”
Taylor Swift’s ‘You All Over Me’ Easter eggs
The ‘Clean’ prelude
“You All Over Me” is a pretty straightforward song about not being able to get past a broken heart. Thematically, it has many similar elements to “Clean” from 1989, referring to rain, stains and, of course, the lyric “No amount of freedom gets you clean.” The original “Clean” was a breakup song, which some speculated was about Harry Styles. She’s never confirmed or denied but in an interview, she did say it was about realizing she was over an ex. Fans are calling her new song the “prelude” to “Clean.”
Is Taylor Swift’s ‘You All Over Me’ about Joe Jonas?!
She also sings, “The best and worst day of June / Was the one that I met you.” Swift dated Joe Jonasfrom July to October 2008, so this line may be about him. It would fit the timeline, assuming this song is from her original Fearless album, because that came out just a month after their breakup. So, if she wrote it around then, it lines up. She later famously said he broke up with her over a 27-second phone call, something she later admitted she regretted speaking about publicly.
Swifties figured out when Taylor Swift shot the cover image for ‘You All Over Me’
Sharp-eyed Swifties noted that Swift likely was photographed for the cover of “You All Over Me” during her 2021 pre-Grammys quarantine with Jack Antonoff, Dessner and Laura Sisk.
What album is ‘You All Over Me (From the Vault)’ going to appear on?
“You All Over Me (From the Vault)” will appear on Fearless (Taylor’s Version), dropping April 9, 2021.
Are Taylor Swift and Maren Morris friends?
Swift and Morris go back to 2017, when Morris said she welcomed comparisons to Swift in an interview with Coveteurmagazine. “I don’t think they’re comparing our sound, but I think they see in Taylor—she’s always been great at blending genres and still making her own sound out of it. You can’t really place her in one category or the other—she’s sort of just an all-encompassing, really great musician and songwriter, so I’m always really flattered when people compare [my career path] to her career path, because I grew up listening to everything.” In 2018, Swift invited Morris to perform her hit with Zedd, “The Middle,” on her Reputation world tour in Arlington, Texas. Morris gushed about the experience in a series of tweets. “Rooted in country, 90s babies, genre-bending, unapologetic,” she wrote. “I look up a whole lot to how you’ve made a career and I hope to someday achieve even a percent of what you’ve so gracefully cultivated @taylorswift13. You know no boundaries, and that’s what music should be about.” Morris later called performing with Swift “transcendental,” telling Billboard, “We were in my hometown, at the Cowboys stadium in Texas, and I just got to watch her work all day, and I’m obsessed with her. I think she’s such a trailblazer. I love that she so gracefully was this huge country artist and then decided, ‘You know what? I’ve conquered this world. I’m gonna dip my toe in the pop waters.’ And it’s just so seamless because she’s a superstar.” In March 2019, Morris presented Swift with the Tour of the Year award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, later writing, “proud of you, Taylor Swift. it isn’t about ticket sales, it’s not about numbers…you just make it about your fans and how they feel before, during, + after your show. I was honored to present Tour of the Year to you.” In April 2020, Morris’ husband, Ryan Hurd, covered Swift’s song “False God,” and Swift ate it up.
Oh, and Taylor Swift dropped a ‘Love Story (Taylor’s Version)’ remix
Just as “You All Over Me (From the Vault)” whetted Swifties’ appetites for more music, Swift also released an “Elvira Remix” of “Love Story (Taylor’s Version).” The video for the remix has a ton of fun throwback photos from Swift’s original Fearless era.
