Tales of The Walking Dead is shaping up to be quite different from previous spinoffs: It’s not a series, but an anthology of individual stories. “The Walking Dead is a show that made television history and attracted an army of passionate and highly engaged fans,” Dan McDermott, president of original programming for AMC Networks and AMC Studios, told Deadline in a statement. “We see so much potential for a wide range of rich and compelling storytelling in this world, and the episodic anthology format of Tales of the Walking Dead will give us the flexibility to entertain existing fans and also offer an entry point for new viewers, especially on streaming platforms. We have seen the appeal of this format in television classics like The Twilight Zone and, more recently, Black Mirror, and are excited to engage with fans in this new way, against the backdrop of this very unique and engrossing world.” Channing Powell, who’s been a writer and producer on both TWD and previous spinoff Fear the Walking Dead, will serve as the showrunner for Tales of The Walking Dead. She gushed in a statement, “I started as a fan of The Walking Dead and have ended up as a showrunner of what will hopefully be one of its most unique spinoffs. That’s nuts and I’m so grateful to AMC [for] supporting me and my writers while we pushed, pulled and poked at the boundaries of this universe to bring you something new and unexpected, while hopefully still tending to what core audiences loved so much about the flagship show.” With the next TWD spinoff shaping up to be nothing like the rest, here’s what we know aboutTales of The Walking Dead, including the cast, release date, and more.

Will there be a Walking Dead spinoff?
There are numerous Walking Dead spinoffs in addition to Tales Of The Walking Dead. The first, Fear The Walking Dead, chronicled the early days of the zombie outbreak and premiered in 2015. The show features Lennie James, who starred as Morgan on The Walking Dead, as he and fellow survivors contend with a world whose horrors extend far beyond the undead and into the realm of nuclear war and more. Fear The Walking Dead is on Season 7. The Walking Dead: World Beyond premiered in 2020 and focuses on the Civic Republic Military. The second (and final) season premiered on Oct. 3, 2021. Another spinoff series was announced focusing on Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), Carol Pelletier (Melissa McBride), but McBride later dropped out. It is now titled Daryl Dixon and will take place in France. The Walking Dead: Origins, which has also yet to premiere, will explore characters’ backstories. The show, which will be an AMC+ streaming exclusive, will look at the backstories of Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), as well as Daryl Dixon and Carol Pelletier. Cohan and Morgan will reprise their roles in Isle of the Dead, which sees their characters traveling together in New York City. Danai Gurira and Andrew Lincoln will star in a Rick and Michonne miniseries. The limited series is set to air sometime in 2023, though no title has been announced at this time. An untitled comedy spinoff is reportedly also in the works, though details are scant—here’s hoping we can see some Rick Grimes dad jokes in live-action.
