On Aug. 18, the streamer debuted the first three episodes of the eight-episode limited series, which stars Nicole Kidman as a downright creepy spiritual retreat host named Masha. One reason why Kidman’s so good in the role? The part of the terrifying guru gone awry was apparently written just for her. Author Liane Moriarty—who also penned the book Big Little Lies, which became a hit series on HBO starring Kidman—discussed the part with the Aussie actress before even setting pen to paper. “Although we knew what the concept was, [Nine Perfect Strangers] was acquired more or less sight unseen,” Moriarty’s producing partner Per Saari told Elle. “Liane was talking to Nicole about the seeds of a character and she embraced it instantly, so Liane ended up writing this extraordinary character for her.” But wait: Kidman’s not the only marquee name in this show’s star-studded cast! Nine Perfect Strangers is based on Moriarty’s New York Times bestselling book of the same name from 2018. In this thrilling story, nine strangers come together in a remote location at a boutique health-and-wellness retreat called Tranquillum House, which is run by Kidman’s resort director. Through unusual “healing” tactics—including having guests dig their own graves!—Masha attempts to rejuvenate their minds and bodies and “fix” these strangers throughout the 10-day retreat, but of course, nothing is as it seems.
