(Warning! Before you go any further, there are potential spoilers ahead for Star Warsand The Mandalorian!) Long believed to be dead after falling into the mouth of the carnivorous monster known as the Sarlacc, Boba Fett was given a tragic backstory in the prequel Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. He later made a surprise comeback in The Mandalorian Season 2—and this time, he wasn’t actually a villain. The famous Jedi hunter is a consistently mysterious figure, keeping fans on their toes thanks to his ambiguous nature as a character who does bad things but may not truly be a bad guy. Now, with a Boba Fett TV series hitting Disney+, fans are salivating at the chance to take a deeper look at a dark character who isn’t necessarily on the “dark side.” Here’s everything to know about The Book of Boba Fett, includingrelease date, cast, the series’ first trailer and more.
Will there be a Boba Fett TV series?
Yes, and it premiered on Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021. The Book of Boba Fett follows the famous bounty hunter’s story after the events of the Star Wars movies and Season 2 of The Mandalorian, in which Boba Fett appeared. The spinoff is expected to find Boba Fett and Fennec Shand occupying Tatooine as Boba Fett takes his throne in what was once strictly Jabba the Hutt’s territory. The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau explained in late 2020 that Boba Fett’s post-credits reveal in The Mandalorian Season 2 finale was kept a secret in order to surprise fans. “This is actually separate from The Mandalorian Season 3,” he also clarified, noting that The Book of Boba Fett can be considered another chapter of The Mandalorian story, but it’s also a separate arc and adventure.
What is The Book of Boba Fett release date?

Who is in The Book of Boba Fett cast?
Like most Disney+ shows, details about The Book of Boba Fett casting are being kept close to the proverbial vest. The only two confirmed cast members are Temuera Morrison, reprising his iconic role as Boba Fett, and Ming-Na Wenas Fennec Shand. Morrison, who previously played Jango Fett and other clones in Episode II (which makes sense since Boba is a clone of Jango), told Express in July 2021, “Jon [Favreau] has come up with some magical formulas… It’s a new world. They like to keep the Star Wars stuff under [lock and] key.” Morrison also opened up to The New York Timesin December 2020 about what he liked best about his new-old gig. “When we find Boba, he’s well-worn, and he’s been through a lot. He’s a survivor, and he’s weathered. Now it was time to find out more about what makes Boba tick,” he explained. “Is he more than just a simple man, trying to make his way through the galaxy? Is he tired of all the fighting? Is he tired of all the killing?” Morrison added, “The one thing I can relate to is, I’m quite a mature man now and things always change. Sometimes you’re in Hollywood, in all the magazines and newspapers. And sometimes you end up in the fish and chip shop in New Zealand, where all the old magazines and papers go. You’re old news.” The Book of Boba Fett was so secretive that Wen didn’t even realize she was shooting the series at first; she actually thought she was filming a third season of The Mandalorian! “For two weeks… I had no idea that I was actually shooting the spinoff,” she told Digital Spy. “When the crew and the cast found out, they were dying. It was so crazy. So, yeah, it was wonderful to finally discover that I was shooting The Book of Boba Fett. They call it The Mandalorian 2.5, in a way. So I wasn’t all wrong!”
Will Grogu be in The Book of Boba Fett?
We hope so! It remains to be seen if our beloved “Baby Yoda” will appear in The Book of Boba Fett. So far it doesn’t seem likely, seeing as Grogu left with a young Luke Skywalker at the end of The Mandalorian Season 2 while Boba Fett and Fennec set up shop on Tatooine. Still, Morrison isn’t against the idea. “Baby Yoda’s probably the biggest actor in Hollywood at the moment, but I never got to work with him very closely or with the people who move him around. I was using him in a not-so-good way, as bait,” he said of his arc with Grogu in The Mandalorian. “But hopefully I’ll get to meet him and we can have a little bonding session.” What has given fans “a new hope” for a Grogu appearance, however, is a production crew shirt from The Book of Boba Fett, which features a tiny Baby Yoda on the breast.
Will Omega be in The Book of Boba Fett?
It’s neither been confirmed nor denied whether Omega will appear in The Book of Boba Fett, but it’s certainly a possibility: The fan-favorite character from The Bad Batch is Boba Fett’s sister, and it’s likely their relationship may be explored in greater depth in The Book of Boba Fett.

Who will direct The Book of Boba Fett?
So far, the directors announced for The Book of Boba Fett are Favreau, Robert Rodriguez, Bryce Dallas Howard and Dave Filoni. Favreau created The Mandalorian and worked closely with Filoni, who is his producing partner and a writer on the upcoming StarWars spinoff Ahsoka and The Bad Batch. Rodriguez and Howard, daughter of famed director Ron, previously directed episodes of The Mandalorian. “My relationship to Star Wars feels unique since I did grow up with George [Lucas],” Bryce told BBC Radio. “He had kids the same age as the kids in my family. We all really grew up together. My holiday gifts from George, ever since I was really young, were Star Wars figurines. And so even before I saw the movies, as a really, really young kid, I was playing with these characters.” She joked that when directing The Mandalorian, she had to make sure that her kids, who visited the set, didn’t spoil any surprises—especially Baby Yoda. “The thing I was most nervous about was that my kids had been on set quite a bit. So they had seen Baby and interacted with Baby,” she admitted to The Hollywood Reporter. “When we were filming, my kids were 6 and 11; they’re now 7 and 12. When the kids went back to school, every single day I would say, ‘So, what are you not gonna talk about today?’ And they would say, ‘Baby!’”
Is there a Book of Boba Fett trailer?
A trailer that debuted on Nov. 1 opens with Boba Fett donning the body armor he wore when he was a bounty hunter (and when he fought alongside Din Djarin in The Mandalorian). We see that Jabba the Hutt’s old palace has been taken over by Boba Fett (which we learned at the end of The Mandalorian Season 2). The trailer also indicates like Boba’s trying to take over the crime syndicate that Jabba ran—but in a kinder, more “respectful” way. The Disney+ Twitter account previously shared a glimpse at the series’ title art. On Nov. 29, another brief trailer dropped, which shows some of Boba Fett’s journey from being “left for dead” on Tatooine to taking over Jabba the Hutt’s throne, containing a lot of the same footage as the original longer trailer. Fett says in the clip, “Jabba ruled with fear. I intend to rule with respect.” More art for the series was also released, including a character poster of Boba Fett. Another poster of Fennec Shand shows just star Wen’s eyes. In early December 2021, a new teaser came out about Boba Fett’s return to Tatooine.
Is Boba Fett good or bad?
Well, it’s complicated. In The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett works for Big Bad Darth Vader and crime lord Jabba the Hutt, who are, obviously, not in great ethical or moral standing. However, as a child, Boba Fett went through a lot: He was a clone of his own father, Jango Fett, and he witnessed Mace Windu (Samuel L. Jackson) behead his dad. He’s less a straight villain doing evil for the sake of doing evil and more of a mercenary, simply going where the money is. He was an antagonist for most of the Star Wars canon, but became a protagonist in The Mandalorian Season 2, when he saved Fennec Shand’s life and helped protect Grogu.

Is Mandalorian Season 3 The Book of Boba Fett?
The Book of Boba Fett is separate from The Mandalorian Season 3, though they exist in the same universe. Favreau explained on Good Morning America, “[The Book of Boba Fett] is actually separate from The Mandalorian Season 3. But what we didn’t say in that announcement is the next show coming up… is going to be The Book of Boba Fett, and then we go into production right after that on The Mandalorian, back with the main character that we all know and love … pretty soon following that. There’s a lot of Star Wars content coming out, I think they announced 10 projects, I think this will be 11.”
Will Book of Boba Fett replace Mandalorian?
The Book of Boba Fett, so far, won’t replace The Mandalorian.
Why is Boba Fett a Mandalorian?
Well, he actually … isn’t. Though Boba Fett wears Mandalorian armor and his father, Jango Fett, is a Mandalorian, it’s because Jango is considered a foundling. Boba was gifted Mandalorian armor, which he rocks nicely, but doesn’t consider himself Mandalorian by birth nor by any other criteria. In fact, when told he isn’t a Mandalorian, in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, Boba replies, “Never said I was.”
